Nomination for the actors for the Ikar theatre award in the Debut category
1, 8 March | Thursday | theatre | Bg | 19:30 90 min | Red hall | Tickets: 12/10 BGN
No Exit is a theatre adaptation of a play written by Jean-Paul Sartre – philosopher, writer and Nobel Prize winner. Three strangers are damned in Hell. Striving for salvation makes them face their own weaknesses and leads them to extremes. Hell is a place where life, character and existence are unthinkable unless we have a mirror to reflect us. The corrective is other people. No Exit is a provocation to reach for our goals and search ways to achieve them. The verdict is free choice. A choice we have no courage to make.
The performance is produced by Other Line Theatre.

The performance is based on texts and the biography of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova and was created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary since her death (in 2016). We, who stand on the thin top of the present and look toward the past called the silver century - the revolution - the terror - the great war - millions of victims - understand all of this as a crazy fantasy. Everything that is remote in time looks unrealistic to in the midst of our easy, rich life. They asked Anna Akhmatova if she could describe all this and she replied, "Yes, I can!"

The series "Trans-European Debates on the European Parliament" presents:
Domestic Violence – What are the Mechanisms of Protection Without the Convention?
13 March | Tuesday | debate | 18:30 | Bg | Red hall | Free entrance
On the day the government decided to withdraw its decision to ratify the Istanbul Convention, a young woman found her death in her home and her partner was detained. Paradoxically, while the Convention was being discussed, media and politicians managed to shift the public's attention from the problem it seeks to tackle - violence against women and violence at home. Paradoxically, the subject resurfaced with the murder in Lyulin Living Quarter of an elderly man and the children held in social isolation. We also remember the murder of Elena Vassileva by her partner who shot her despite the dozens of complaints of harassment. Is the country really deaf to violence in the family and at home, or is there a deficit in institutional reaction and prevention mechanisms? What can help police work more effectively? Why do people who witness violence in the family not interfere? What can the government, institutions, the media and civil society do to raise public intolerance to violence? How does the existing legislation help tackle the problem? What are the measures and activities that need to be developed? What are the institutions *beyond the* Istanbul Convention doing and what can they do? How do we get out of the vicious circle of violence that causes violence?
A conversation between experts, representatives of the institutions and victims of domestic violence with the participation of Katya Krastanova, Animus Association, Galina Lacheva, victim, Yana Tavanie, Fine Acts, and Maxim Stoimenov. An invitation has been sent to the Ministry of Interior for a representative.

The photos show the connections between the use of food, water, energy, and the environment. At first glance, these are pictures of ordinary moments in everyday life, such as making ljutenica, but they reveal relationships that often remain hidden by routines and traditions. The photo captions will be in Bulgarian.

ResNexus presents: Urban Farming in Sofia: Hobby, Lifestyle or Means of Survival?
The ResNexus project explores the links between food, water, energy and the environment in Sofia by studying the connections between urban farming practices, preparing food for winter and using energy. The research seeks to answer two main questions:
• How does the connection between food, water, energy and the environment in Sofia lead to vulnerability in the city? • How can the connection between food, water and energy in Sofia lead to greater fairness and sustainability in their use?
On 20 March, five panelists will discuss the topic of urban farming. Each speaker will have seven minutes to present their point and will bring along an object to represent their argument. There will be an open discussion with the audience afterwards.

Оpen University | Science, art and technologies
The Open University is a series of lectures and discussions for everyone interested in expanding their knowledge of the contemporary world. Its fifth series is exploring the connections between science, art and technologies
Re:Foundation for Studies in the Field of Science & Art: Тhe Three Types of Music According to Boethius and the Harmonious Social Model
The lecture is based on the ancient concept of music as a matter of sequence and number, but also as an ethical concept and model of society where even innovations such as the addition of extra strings to the guitar can present dangers to the underlying and complex established order. In De Institutione Musica Beothius talks about the three types of musics: musica mundana, humana and instrumentalis, which resonate in the terminology found in the philosophical works of Leibniz, Schopenhauer, Wagner, Nietzsche, Skryabin, Steiner, Hindemith ... All musical terms, such as modus, tonos, tropus, armonia modulatio, corda, nervus, vox, sonus, etc., are inherited from Orphic and Pythagorean tradition. They inherit the belief, found in The Laws by Plato, in the necessity of having "choirs of different ages" as the rational basis of a harmonious society.
More about the lecturer
Professor Neva Krasteva is an organist, musicologist and composer, a professor in counterpoint, fugue and organ at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music, Sofia. She graduated in Musicology at the Moscow State Conservatory under professor Y. Holopov and in organ under prof. L. Royzmann. She specialized in organ in Prague and Zurich with prof. I. Rheinberger. Since 1973, she has been a professor at the National Academy of Music "Pancho Vladigerov". She organized the first class in organ in Bulgaria in 1978 at the National Music Academy and at the New Bulgarian University. Since 1974 she has actively performed concerts as an organist in Bulgaria, Europe and in some Asian countries and the United States. She is the author of vocal-instrumental works with organ, works for organ; chamber vocal-instrumental music, chorus music, etc. She writes musical theory studies, most of which are collected in three volumes. Visitors will be able to participate in discussions and professional meetings between Bulgarian and visiting artists from Lithuania and the Netherlands and discuss the use of new media and technologies in the arts.
An interactive theatre performance inspired by the structure and imagery of Samuel Beckett's play "Happy Days". Instead of the original text of the play, the play will be based on texts of the audience on that particular evening. Each performance will have its own dramatic language, but the structure will always remain the same.
The aim is to achieve the arrangement of a multicoloured mandala to be scattered by the wind at the end. The active prior participation of the audience is necessary for this format to work. To become a playwright of the show, each of the 25 viewers of "Happy Beckett" must visit the site happybeckett.com, choose a date, complete a poll, and only then buy a ticket.

People's Populism vs Elites' Democracy?
27 March | Tuesday | a conversation with Frank Furedi and Ivan Krastev 18:30 | Red hall | En, Bg translation | Free entrance
Frank Furedi is the most cited English sociologist in the English press. In his latest book, "Populism and the European Culture Wars", he defends the thesis that the current anti-populist moral panic reveals the loss of faith of European liberal elites in democracy and the ability of ordinary people to be responsible citizens. But is there a radical democratic justification of populism? Frank Furedi will talk on the topic with political scientist Ivan Krastev.
Moderator: Dessislava Gavrilova, The Red House.
More on the series "Ideological Trajectories: the New Dissidents"
Radical changes are taking place in political landscapes of Europe and the world. In the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, Poland, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Spain, Germany and the United States, new anti-elite parties and candidates with almost no background are gaining broad support and winning elections, and in general dictating the political agenda. Their positions are varied – leaning both to the left and the right; but they champion a common criticism against traditional elites who have lost touch with the majority of ordinary voters' concerns and interests. These new players have their fierce opponents, they are often called populist, there are public appeals for their exclusion from politics. After decades of skepticism and apathy, confrontation and passion are returning to the core of political life. The negative side of this trend towards highly conflicting identity politics is the narrowing space for conversation.
In this series we analyze without prejudice the ideological displacements in contemporary society and the grounds a series of prominent public figures find for them. Why do politicians and intellectuals active in the first years of democracy now rebel against European elites? What turns a convinced pro-European into an advocate of Brexit? What changes in recent years have made such ideological shifts possible? What does it cost to leave the comfort zone of your own reference group and does this make you a "new dissident"? Is this the end of liberalism's hegemony and the end of the "End of History"?
The series "Ideological Trajectories: the New Dissidents" is organized by The Red House in partnership with the Europe-wide network of debating houses Time to Talk. The series is supported by a grant from the Foundation Open Society Institute in cooperation with the OSIFE of the Open Society Foundations.

What is the Place of Kosovo in the EU Western Balkans Enlargement Strategy?
30 March | Friday | 19:00 | debate | Red hall | Bg | Free entrance
More on the topic The Western Balkan countries are about to become part of the European Union. Serbia and Montenegro are expected to join in 2025, but one of the conditions for the candidate countries is to resolve the territorial disputes with their neighbours. Serbia does not officially recognize Kosovo's independence, and most Serbians are euro-skeptic, partly because of the EU's condition of normalizing relations with Pristina. Should the EU intervene in the relations between the countries of the Balkan Peninsula? Are these membership conditions the only chance to resolve border disputes or will they cause further polarization in the political dialogue between the candidate countries? About the project The debate is organized by the Bulgarian Debate Association as part of the project "Argue Europe" with the financial support of Sofia Municipality and the partnership of The Red House Centre for Culture and Debate "Andrey Nikolov".
